Spark realizes how patiently everyone who is in consideration for the "Women's Playwriting Project" has been waiting for updates and we are here to provide those for you:
We have received and read over 330 plays over the course of the COVID-19 lockdown. We have witnessed an explosion of creative energy and compelling stories and we were able to create opportunities for local actors to collaborate with our review committee and take part in over 80 hours worth of your short play readings over ZOOM. Their performances, artistic opinions and input assisted us in choosing the most diverse narratives to present.
How did we Score Each Play?:
All plays were read aloud by actors over ZOOM sessions and given an averaged score based on a selecting committee's scoring system. If your play was awarded a ZOOM reading it scored VERY well! If your play was selected your play made it into our top ranking! :-)
The initial date of August 7, 8, & 9th was beginning to feel unrealistic with our current health crisis and because of that we have decided to expand our festival over the next year. Prepping, producing, rehearsing, recording, and now, filming. Due to current pandemic and lockdown limitations we feel that it is safe to say we will be able to showcase these scripts in the Summer of 2021 at an outdoor venue pending local NYS health and safety guidelines.
We plan to make this a year long project with multiple virtual showcases for our virtually staged plays & a live film screening for our short films. The exact dates will be released later in the year when we have more information on the current pandemic re-openings and each writer will be informed accordingly.
The Covid-19 SPARK Plan:
The safety of our actors, crew, and audiences will always come first. Due to COVID-19 we have had to reimagine our project quite a bit to keep ourselves and all involved safe during the duration of it. Still, it is our mission to make sure women's voices are heard and we've put our heads together to come up with a new course of action.
We have decided to reimagine our festival. Instead of having live events we will adapting our selected play scripts to film scripts and changing our final live performances into a film festival pending each chosen writer's approval. We will be filming our top 20 play submissions. This change will help us spread out our potential audience members, showcase dates, and will help limit our person-to-person contact during production. As you can imagine, this will take a bit longer to produce and will require a bit more fundraising on our end. The saying "patience is a virtue" certainly applies to us all during these uncertain times. If selected you will be receiving a copy of your produced film, directed by a woman and cast with local NY talent.
To all who submitted:
Thank you for your submissions and for believing in our mission to help get more work by women produced and to provide more opportunities for women in theatre.
Please follow us on our social media outlets for updates regarding this project! We will showing our virtually staged performances through a password protected stream at the end of each month leading up to our main event. Ticket's will be suggested donations.
We hope you will sign on to support and watch the work of your fellow women playwrights.
