"The knowledge that every day there is something more to learn,
something higher to reach for, something new to make for others,
makes each day infinitely precious"

Women's Writing Festival

Our Women’s Playwriting Festival is a new program designed to develop and produce new works by emerging female playwrights in the Long Island/NYC area. The goal of this event is to create opportunities, mentorship, education, and a platform for female artists to share their powerful stories. We do this by providing space, resources, marketing, and creative support through a series of rehearsals and performances.

Scripts can be from any play genre, but must be original. In keeping with the theme of this festival, playwrights should be female, plays should meet any of the following criteria; features a strong female lead, features a predominantly female cast, or addresses a topic important to women. We feel that these criteria would provide opportunities for female performers and theatre artists to step into powerful roles and would be keeping with the overall goal of the festival. This project will also give opportunities to professionals in the area of performing, stage production, and technical theater. The primary focus of this project is to provide a space for female playwrights to develop and share their ideas with a broader audience.

We are gearing up for our Women's Writing Festival and we are VERY excited about it. We look forward to creating more opportunities for new female writers to get their work shown, for aspiring female directors to get their hands on some new material and for female performers to have a chance at portraying roles written by women FOR women. Characters of any gender are welcome in all scripts just as long as the story focus is on a female character. We will cast other genders as needed for each piece at the discretion of each director. Due to a large submission pool we will be focussing on female writers for this project, we never discriminate based on gender and men will be welcome to audition for appropriate performance roles as called for in play selections. There are opportunities for all here at Spark Creative Works!

Writer Submission Requirements

  • We are looking for submissions of ONE ACT PLAYS that run STRICTLY between 10-20 minutes in length. We have many submissions and we'd like to include as many as we can, without sacrificing the quality of pieces. *Please limit your submissions to ONE of your best plays, taking into account our guidelines.

  • Pieces must be ORIGINAL but can be previously produced.

  • We are looking to showcase works from women writers only. All plays must fit one or more of the criteria below:

    - The piece features a strong female lead
    - The piece features a predominately female cast OR
    - The piece addresses a topic important to women that is rarely touched.

  • Please limit characters from 1-5 per submission (MAX)

*We feel that this criteria would provide opportunities for female performers to step into powerful roles and would be keeping with the overall goals of the festival.

  • Writers can be involved in the process but are encouraged not to direct their own pieces as we are trying to promote collaboration within our theatre community.

We will be holding auditions for a cast of about 10-15 performers and we will be bringing on board 5-8 female directors to work in collaboration with our writers for this project. We have far surpassed our initial submission goals of 20-40+ submissions. Our guidelines will be strictly followed in submission of works. All submissions will be read and selected by a committee chosen by SPARK Creative Works compromised of local female theatre professionals. Writers in the Long Island/NYC area will be considered first, though we are accepting out-of-state submissions. We look forward to reading your submissions!

Please send all submissions to: info.sparkcreativeworks@gmail.com
Please include your location.
